Puerto Rico. Our very first trip together. This is what started it all. We developed a severe case of wanderlust as soon as we stepped foot on this island. Colorful streets, old school architecture, and amazing beaches. What more can you ask for! We spent five days here between Old San Juan, the capital city, and the small surf town of Rincon. It was a short 2 hr flight from our hometown in Florida.
Things To Do
We packed soo much stuff into our five day vacation that we barely got a chance to relax! Here are the highlights from our trip.
Walk the streets of Old San Juan
After we landed from our short 2 hour flight, we rented a car and headed over to Old San Juan, a 20 minute drive from the airport. We checked into our Airbnb and immediately took to the streets. Everything here was soo colorful! It still had that colonial vibe which made us want to explore this city even more. There are tons of shops to check out, plenty of places to eat, and bars on every corner! You need to try their local dish called mofongo, which is mashed fried plantains. Coffee is also huge in Puerto Rico. Check out Caficultura, situated off a massive plaza in the middle of Old San Juan.
El Yunque National Forest
Located in northeast Puerto Rico, El Yunque is the largest rainforest in Puerto Rico. It is home to hundreds of types of birds, bats, and lizards. No large animals call this rainforest home. We drove an hour from Old San Juan to get here, it was an easy trip. We visited La Mina Falls and brought our swimsuits because we heard it has a nice pool at the bottom where people go swimming. It was about a 30 minute hike to the waterfall through the rainforest. We were hoping that it wasn’t too crowded, but boy were we wrong! We found out that locals from all over like to come here and swim on hot days. We still had a great time and the waterfall was very beautiful.
Visit a surf town
Puerto Rico is known for it’s surfing, and there are a bunch of beach towns not very far from Old San Juan. We decided to stay in Rincon for two days and loved every minute of it! It was about a 2.5 hr drive from Old San Juan. Everything about this small beach town and it’s laid-back vibe was perfect. The people, food, beaches, this seriously was a perfect place to visit. There are 7 beaches located within 15 miles of each other and every one has their own personality. Our favorites were Sandy Beach and Steps Beach. You could also catch amazing sunsets basically anywhere in this town as well! We HIGHLY recommend checking out Rincon on your Puerto Rico trip!
Cueva Ventana is a large cave situated on top of a limestone cliff in Arecibo, Puerto Rico, overlooking a beautiful river valley. You can’t access the tour without a tour guide, They take you on a 45 minute hike through the cave and you get to learn about it’s history. It was a very easy and fun hike, and the views from inside the cave of the river valley down below were incredible. We used Cueva Aventura Ventana as our tour guides. It was about $20/person.
Cueva del Indio
Another beautiful destination in Arecibo, Cueva del Indio is a prehistoric rock site that is said to contain the largest number of petroglyphs found along the coastal zone. We paid about $2 to park and explored the area for a couple hours. It has huge cliffs overlooking the ocean that I had a hard time trying to convince my wife to take pictures at! They were very high!
Where To Stay
In Old San Juan we found an Airbnb with an ocean front view that was also a 5 minute walk from everything downtown. It was huge! It had four bedrooms and a private kitchen. For $80/night, it was a very affordable play to stay. Here is the listing on Airbnb: Apartment in the of Old San Juan
In Rincon, we found another Airbnb just steps from the beach. It had a rooftop area that you could see the ocean from! At the bottom of the hill from the apartment, there were about three restaurants that served AMAZING food that we frequented every night! Here is the listing on Airbnb: Casa Bianca Apt. B1
We absolutely LOVED our visit to Puerto Rico. Every aspect of this island was perfect. From the beautiful beaches, amazing food, and lovely locals, you need to check this island out!
